162 x 138 cm  //  5ft 4" x 4ft 6"

Silk satin ikat from second half of 18th century, sometimes termed Nuage to mean ‘Clouds’ in French (the same meaning as per the Uzbek word for ikat 'Abra’). Comprising of three joined lengths each approx 47cm - the whole fabric is lined with a vintage soft orange glazed cotton. Another name used in French is  chine or chine a la branche, which specifically refers to multi-coloured warp-patterned fabric.

Doubts have been expressed as to whether it is in fact French due to the presence of a peculiar baste fibre in the structure more associated with an oriental origin, which almost certainly means Chinese. Whilst we remain confident it is 18th century silk, the fact that it is not French might negatively impact the price, despite its rarity.
